Official figures show that to date at least 2,900 people in the United States have died from the flu, 800 more than the number estimated last week.

Flu cases and hospitalizations have also increased dramatically since the season started last October, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 6.4 million people have been infected and 55,000 have been hospitalized.
